A Diabolical Interview

This is a new one for me. I want to share my experience as a writer while using this platform as a springboard for ideas and improvement. It will be a form of trial & error as I continue to become acquainted with my characters, their backgrounds and story arcs. It will also, I hope, help me better understand my style and my own thought process as I navigate the wicked twists and turns of this dark and humorous murder mystery. Whether it was brought on by my trembling ego or the natural progression of the character, I kept this one fairly short. Enjoy!

In my mind, I boldly went into this one-on-one with my shield up. I had been warned of her behavior, her infamous lack of humility and tact. In all honesty, these are things I have always been accused of lacking. However, being on the receiving end was terrifying. I sat anxiously on an unbearable bed of pins and needles throughout our short, yet tedious interview.

I offered to meet her at a place of her choosing. I knew I was in for a ludicrous time when she told me the name of the place…SCANDAL.

It was a fitting choice seeing that Delphine Claiborne and her family are currently caught up in a wave of controversy. A multiple murder investigation has the community of Terrebonne Parish in an upheaval.

We sat at a high top in a dimly lit corner while a sultry blues band took the stage which was cast in a warm red glow. She sat across from me in a skin-tight red dress which only reached the middle of her thighs. Her long blonde hair cascaded down meticulously over her bare shoulders. Her piercing blue eyes studied my every move.

Thank you for taking the time to speak with me.

Sugga, the pleasure is all mine.

Is there anything you can share about this investigation?

Darlin’ they’d shoot me dead right here if I did! So much secrecy…everythin’ in our little town here is just shrouded in secrecy. Don’t ya find that…titillatin’?

Do you?

Of course! I’ve got a pulse, don’t I?

I suppose.

You can come ova here an’ check if you’d like.

Uh, anyway, you and your family have recently found yourselves at the center of a murder investigation, correct?

We sure have! I gotta tell ya, though, it all started when those Yankee lawyers came down here for Mardi Gras.

You don’t like them?

Oh, don’t get me wrong, honey. They’re cute as all get out!

Well, th-that’s not quite what I meant by “like them.”

*She leans back, draping an arm over the back of her chair and giggles loudly*

You’re funny.

There have been rumors that hoodoo was involved. What can you tell me about that?

Oh, there’s so much to tell. But, I find it to be kinda dull…

Do you dabble in it?

I’ve been known to “fix” a few people.

Harm them?

Darlin’, whattaya say we get outta here an’ grab a real drink?

Aren’t you involved with Mr. Beaufort?

Grover? Oh, poo…A drink is only a drink…unless it isn’t. Are ya implyin’ ya want it to be somethin’ more?

Clearly, this isn’t going anywhere.

Ya wanna go somewhere?

No.

Do I make ya nervous? Ain’t no reason for ya to be nervous, darlin’.

No reason other than bodies dropping like flies around you.

*She cackles wildly*

You’re funny.

What can you tell me about Jo Landry?

Why do ya wanna talk about her?

Well, she was the- – –

I don’t particularly give a shit…Ya know what? I’m done jaw-flappin’ about all this nonsense. I’m gonna go see what those lawyers are up to. I think one of ’em is sweet on me.

She shot me a cringeworthy wink and lightly stroked the back of my hand as she walked away from the table.

I don’t know what to make of her or the predicament in which the Claiborne family find themselves.

What I do know is I can’t wait to see how it all plays out.
